FAQs

Why is Commander Ratings necessary? Doesn't the DEOCS do the same thing?

Commander Ratings addresses critical gaps in military feedback systems, particularly the stigma surrounding tools like the DEOCS survey. Many service members distrust these surveys due to their use of email-specific links, which raises concerns about anonymity and discourages honest responses. Commander Ratings offers a solution: a free, fully anonymous platform, independent of the Department of Defense (DoD). This ensures service members can provide candid feedback without fear of retaliation, provided reviews contain no identifying information.

Additionally, Commander Ratings promotes transparency, tackling the issue of selective disclosure in platforms like DEOCS. Too often, leadership filters feedback, withholding critical insights—especially if they reflect poorly on the command team. As a member of your unit, you deserve to know the challenges your peers face and the perceptions of leadership. Commander Ratings makes all feedback publicly accessible, ensuring that neither complaints nor praise are hidden.

Finally, Commander Ratings fosters accountability. When leadership fails to address issues to protect their own interests or those of their subordinates, service members suffer. Our platform empowers you to voice concerns, issues, or praise openly, making them visible to all levels of leadership. Want to recognize a captain who’s excelling but under-appreciated? Submit a review to highlight their efforts. Facing obstacles, like a commander denying access to medical care, with no recourse? Post a review to inform higher-ups and drive accountability.

Our platform exists to give you, the military member, an avenue for feedback, transparency, and accountability.

Can I say anything I want in the comments section?

Commander Ratings is designed as a professional tool to enable senior leadership to evaluate and monitor the performance and conduct of their subordinates, rather than serving as a platform for complaints. Reviews intended to slander or defame, rather than provide constructive and meaningful feedback, will not be approved. If a submission does not meet our standards, we will notify you via email with an opportunity to revise and resubmit. We welcome your contributions to ensure productive and respectful dialogue.

My Commander broke the law and its serious. Can I post about this?

To ensure accountability, we encourage you to submit your claims. We may need to contact you for supporting documents to verify your review. Please be sure to include your email address in your submission so we can reach out to you directly. If you don’t provide an email, you may want to email us first to make sure we can get in touch with you. Any documents you provide will be deleted after we’ve verified your claims. We’ll annotate your review with a statement confirming that the claims have been verified and substantiated.

Why do you need documentation for serious violations?

At Commander Ratings, we verify all serious claims of misconduct to ensure the accuracy and truthfulness of the comments posted on a commander’s profile.

Claims of this nature, such as a commander sleeping with subordinates, require proof (e.g., a text message or a sworn statement). Given the potential damage to a career and reputation, we believe it’s our responsibility to perform due diligence and approve these comments only after they have been verified.

What about Enlisted Leaders? Can we rate them too?

Currently, we only have reviews for commanders and officers. However, we plan to expand to include E7 and higher ratings in the coming months, which will give you a greater voice regarding your leadership. We’ve also included warrant officers in our reviews, as they fall between the enlisted and officer ranks.

This site is only for the American military. Will other countries be added?

We’re hoping to expand to Canada, Australia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom during our next phase. This will be possible if the platform continues to be a success. But we need your support by sharing the site, using it, and helping to build a database that makes Commander Ratings the go-to destination for all things military leadership.

I’m an Officer and there is false information on my profile. What can I do?

If you find information on your profile that is verifiably false, please contact us for its removal. We will remove the information once you provide documentation proving it is incorrect.

I'm an Officer and I do not agree with my rating. Can you change it?

No, we will not change a rating simply because the ratee disagrees.

Is Commander Ratings affiliated with the Department of Defense or any military branch?

Commander Ratings is not affiliated with, endorsed, or sponsored by the DoD in any way.
